Complicated toilet relocation

A first-floor guest bathroom was reconfigured by relocating the toilet and preparing the original toilet area for a shower.

The story

The bathroom layout needed to change, but the work required cutting into a thick concrete slab with heavy reinforcement. The toilet drain was moved several feet to the right, and the original toilet location was prepared for the new shower connection.

The slab was approximately 12 inches thick and had multiple layers of rebar, which made cutting and removal slow. The saw blade was not deep enough for a straight full-depth cut, so the concrete had to be opened in wider stepped sections. A chipping hammer and large jackhammer were used to break the slab, and the debris was removed gradually in bags while working through heavy dust and noise.

Work completed

The toilet drain location was moved about 6 to 8 feet to the right. The original toilet area was opened for the shower drain. Concrete was cut and removed, rebar areas were handled, and fittings were adjusted to fit the limited slab depth.

Final result

The bathroom rough plumbing was changed to match the new layout. The toilet location was moved, and the shower drain connection was prepared in the original toilet area. The work required significant slab cutting, fitting adjustment, and careful planning because of the concrete thickness.
